Swing Clamps utilize a sturdy helical-cam mechanism to swing the clamping arm clear for unrestricted loading. The threaded-cartridge Swing Clamps shown here provide considerable clamping force in a small size, because they can operate at a full 7250 psi with any standard clamping arm. These Swing Clamps incorporate the unique safety-clutch mechanism. If the clamping arm strikes an unexpected object during its swing, the clutch disengages to avoid damaging the object or the clamp's helical-cam mechanism. Clamping arm can be mounted to start its 90° swing from any position within 360°. Threaded-cartridge Swing Clamps are designed specifically for space-saving manifold mounting.
Application Information
Manifold mounting allows placing these swing clamps very close together.
When clamping over a work support, these swing clamps are ideally matched with small threaded-body work supports (1500 lbs load capacity at 7500 psi). The design rule in such applications is that work-support load capacity should be at least 2X clamping force.
This fixture has three workpieces held by nine swing clamps with short clamping arms. Short arms extend only 0.16" onto the workpiece, but are ideal for some small parts.
Clamping Action
Swing Clamps are pull-type cylinders where part of the total stroke is used to swing the piston, and the remaining stroke is available as the clamping range. Applying fluid pressure swings arm 90° over workpiece then clamps down. Single-acting version has a fast, totally dependable spring return that lifts arm then swings it back 90° for loading/unloading. Optional fluid return (double acting).
Design Considerations
These Swing Clamps incorporate the unique safety-clutch mechanism. If the clamping arm strikes an unexpected object during its swing, the clutch disengages to avoid damaging the object or the clamp's helical-cam mechanism. Do not exceed maximum fluid flow rate in table. For extended clamp life and proper operation of the safety clutch, a simple flow-control valve may be required if the fixture is powered by a high-flow-rate power source and only contains a few clamps. Clamping time should be at least one second.
Mounting & Fluid Supply
Screw clamp into fixture up to the body hex. Threaded-cartridge clamps have O-ring seals on their outside diameter, so they require a precision mounting hole. Round the sharp edge on the upper fluid passage with a 3/16" diameter ball. Check for burrs with finger before installing. Fluid passages must be drilled. Do not use NPT fittings.
Material
Piston > Alloy steel, nitrated for wear and corrosion resistance. Housing > Mild steel, nitrated for wear and corrosion resistance. Piston rod wiper > Viton.
