Tips for keeping a machine shop clean and safe

Jun 11, 2021

Keeping your machine shop clean and organized isn’t just for looks - it leads to a safer work environment, more satisfied employees and potential cost savings. A clean shop can also help drive more business - customers associate a sharp-looking facility with quality, and are more likely to use your shop for repeat jobs.

At All Industrial Tool Supply, we’re happy to share our knowledge and experience to help you run a safe, profitable business. Let’s take a look at some tips and ideas for keeping your workspace tidy, safe, and efficient:

Cover safety at orientation

Your shop should have a published safety manual, and make sure to train new employees on your procedures when they are hired or begin a new role, before they start work.

Adequate shop lighting

Dim work environments make it hard to read measuring tools and inspect work quality. Proper lighting helps control your error rate, slows material waste, and can reduce trip and fall hazards.

Clean, clear floors

Keep aisles free of clutter and equipment. Your work area should be well marked with proper signage.

Cover any wet surfaces with non-slip material. Any spills should be contained immediately using absorbent cellulose socks to prevent their spread.

Air quality and ventilation

Breathing particles created during the machining process isn’t healthy. Mist, dust, and other contaminants can be dangerous to employee health.

Consider using an oil mist collector to remove oil residue from the air.

Machines

Make sure machines (when applicable) are securely anchored to prevent movement.

Each machine should have adequate clearance around it to allow for material, removing waste, setup, and operations.

Machines should be equipped with guards that protect against flying chips, sparks, and rotating parts.

Dress for the job

Always wear safety glasses or goggles to prevent particles or debris from getting into your eyes.

Avoid wearing loose or baggy clothing that could get caught in a machine. Don’t wear necklaces, which pose a similar risk. Similarly, if you have long hair, tie it back for the same reason. Nothing should be worn below the elbow, including watches and rings.

No gloves should be worn around rotating or moving machinery, including grinders, mills, lathes, drill presses, or similar.

Wear appropriate footwear - like steel-toe boots to prevent injuries in the event something falls on your foot, and to protect against chemical spills.

First Aid kits

First Aid kits should be available at regular intervals in your shop. Make sure they are checked regularly and replenished as needed.
