Get the most out of your magnetic base holder and dial or test indicator

A magnetic base holder, paired with a dial indicator (or test indicator) can help you tackle common inspection jobs, like measuring runout or comparing parts to a master. Properly cared for, a quality base and indicator can last a lifetime.

Here’s how to choose and care for a magnetic base holder and matching dial/test indicators.

Choose the right setup for your needs

Magnetic base holders come with a variety of top and arm lengths, yielding a total reach measured in inches, like “12 inch total reach”. Longer total reach can allow you to inspect more challenging surfaces.

Consider clamping force

A strong magnet ensures that nothing will move - until you want it to. Clamping force, advertised in pounds, varies; so choose one that meets your needs, including the weight of the indicator(s) you're planning on using.

Storing a magnetic base

Most magnetic bases have an on/off switch. You can store them “on”, with the magnet attached to a metal surface, or “off”, in a drawer or tool chest. Don’t leave the base switched “on” without attaching it to a metal surface, as doing so can weaken the magnet over time. Whatever you decide, take care that the base isn’t knocked over.

Storing dial indicators

Keep your dial or test indicators in a dry place, away from risk of being dropped. Keeping them covered, away from dust and moisture is a good practice.

If the indicator does accumulate dust, wipe the indicator spindle and point with a lint-free cloth, until clean.

Test your setup regularly

Indicators only have value if they’re accurate. Test yours at regular intervals during use, comparing the readings to a master part.

Ensure the reference surface is level and clean at all times.
